Turn the Blog Archive into a Calendar widget

I noticed whilst adding posts predated to the 1970s that the standard Blog Archive widget would not display the posts prior to 1990. This was really annoying. How could I fix this problem? Well, searching the Internet I came across a tutorial for converting a standard blog archive widget into a blog archive calendar widget. I thought I'd give it a try to see if it works.

I've added blog archive calendar widgets before and they weren't impressive. But after adding all the code to another template I now have the 1970s posts being displayed. It solved my problem and it came with a bonus - you can actually customize the look of the calendar to make it match the look of your blog.

Having posts dated prior to 1990 on Blogger is a bonus because you can put unimportant information in these posts and people generally won't go looking for them in your blog archives widget.
